Makda (Maki) Kalayu’s art is a vivid exploration of heritage and identity, reflecting a rich tapestry woven from her Ethiopian roots and diasporic experiences. She is a multimedia artist with experience in drawing, painting, relief printmaking, collage, photography, murals, and sustainable sculpture using various approaches to embody a deep engagement with themes of cultural memory and emotional essence.

Immigrating from Ethiopia to the U.S. in 2007, Kalayu's artistic journey began in high school, where her response to the injustices faced by Black Americans took the form of a poignant series of portraits. This early work laid the foundation for socially conscious art, further developing during her college years as an International Studies and Studio Art major.

Celebrated for her bouncy, colorful style, Kalayu’s art connects with viewers emotionally. Their compositions offer a candid look at diasporic experiences, personal narratives, and intimate scenes. Her practice reflects a commitment to highlighting the beauty and complexity of cultural heritage regardless of origin. 🌍🎨
